FAQ’s

Becoming a Peer Tutor:

What Happens Once I Become a Peer Tutor?

Once registered, the UTSSA will email your name and preferred contact details to UTS students who request help with your subject(s).  We only give out the following details: name, preferred contact detail(s), subject result (when requested) and gender (when requested).

The student can then contact you directly to discuss availability and a mutually agreeable time and place to meet. We recommend meeting in a other public place such as the UTS Library.

We cannot guarantee how much (if any) work you will get as this will depend on the demand for your subject(s), but it costs nothing to register for this service which is run to assist students in their studies whilst providing some opportunity for paid student work.

Does the student pay me for my time tutoring?

Yes. The recommended rate to charge students is $25 per hour, paid directly to the tutor by the student at the end of each lesson. Please ensure the hourly rate is agreed upon BEFORE tutoring occurs.

Requesting a Peer Tutor:

What Happens Once I Request a Peer Tutor?

Once we have received your form, we shall email you a list of students who tutor in your chosen subject(s) and their contact details (please note: we can only send tutor details to a UTS email address). You can then contact the tutor(s) directly to discuss availability and payment.  If you wish, you can also discuss the specific areas you want help with and what format you would like the tutoring session(s) to take.

The Students’ Association recommends meeting in a public place such as the UTS Library.

Are Tutors available for every UTS Subject?

No. Some UTS subjects have several Peer Tutors registered but for other UTS subjects we do not have any Peer Tutors.

However, if we do not have a tutor for your subject you can always apply again later in the semester – tutors continue to sign up throughout the semester. And remember, if you pass a subject with a grade of credit or higher you can be a tutor in that subject too!

Do I Pay the student?

Yes. Peer tutors usually charge $25 an hour for individual tutoring.

Depending on experience some tutors have slightly higher fees. Please ensure the hourly rate is agreed upon BEFORE tutoring occurs.
