FAQ’s

Becoming a Peer Tutor:

What Happens Once I Become a Peer Tutor?

Once registered, the UTSSA will email your name and preferred contact details to UTS students who request help with your subject(s).
We only give out the following details: name, preferred contact detail(s), subject result (when requested) and gender (when requested).
The student can then contact you directly to discuss availability and a mutually agreeable time and place to meet. We recommend meeting in a public place such as the UTS Library or a cafe.

How much tutoring will I do?

We cannot guarantee how much (if any) work you will get as this will depend on the demand for your subject(s), but it costs nothing to register for this service which is run to assist students in their studies whilst providing some opportunity for paid student work.

Does the student pay me for my time tutoring?

Yes. The recommended rate to charge students is $25 per hour, paid directly to the tutor by the student at the end of each lesson.
Please ensure the hourly rate is agreed upon BEFORE tutoring occurs.

I completed subjects at another university, can I become a Peer Tutor?

Unfortunately we do not take student tutors who have studied a subject at other Universities as our scheme is UTS subject based.
Due to the difficulty in ascertaining similar content, only students who have completed a subject at UTS can register as a Peer Tutor - this allows students to be assisted by tutors who have a familiarity with the expectations of the subject, lecturers and tutors within the context of UTS.

I completed subjects at UTS Insearch, can I become a Peer Tutor?

Unfortunately we do not take student tutors from UTS Insearch as our scheme is UTS subject based.
The subject content of Insearch subjects differs significantly enough that only students who have completed a UTS-based subject can register as a Peer Tutor for that subject - this allows students to be assisted by tutors who have a familiarity with the expectations of the subject, lecturers and tutors within the context of UTS.

Requesting a Peer Tutor:

What Happens Once I Request a Peer Tutor?

Once we have received your form, we shall email you a list of students who tutor in your chosen subject(s) and their contact details (please note: we can only send tutor details to a UTS email address). You can then contact the tutor(s) directly to discuss availability and payment.  You can also discuss the specific areas you want help with and what format you would like the tutoring session(s) to take.

The Students’ Association recommends meeting in a public place such as the UTS Library or a cafe.

Are Tutors available for every UTS Subject?

No. Some UTS subjects have several Peer Tutors registered but for other UTS subjects we do not have any Peer Tutors. If we do not have a tutor for your subject you can either provide the subject name and number of a UTS subject with similar content or, apply again later in the semester, as tutors continue to sign up throughout the semester. Remember, if you pass a subject with a grade of credit or higher you can be a tutor in that subject too!

Do I Pay the student?

Yes. The recommended rate Peer Tutors charge is $25 an hour for individual tutoring, paid by the student to the tutor at the time of meeting.
Depending on experience some tutors have slightly higher fees. Please ensure the hourly rate is agreed upon BEFORE tutoring commences.
